The Devil Wears Prada

The Devil Wears Prada (novel) - WikipediaSo I kind of have a love/hate relationship with Jennifer Weisberger. Sometimes I love her writing like in Goodnight Nobody and then I there are times like In Her Shoes where I just don't like her.

I didn't really like this book. It was a bit boring. I guess a lot of things seemed essential but in the end really had nothing to do with anything. I know she was trying to set the stage of how evil the boss was and how the her minions should be worried about their true feelings getting back to her. I just felt like it was a waste of time. It became the same thing over and over again. I am going to read the next two books in the series and see how that goes.

Andy wants to be a writer for The New York Post. She is called in to take a job at a magazine where she knows nothing. She becomes the junior assistant to the editor of  Runway magazine. She meets her boss once before starting her training and wonders what the big deal is. It isn't until Miranda is in the office that she realizes how hellish this job really is. Miranda is a woman who demands anything she wants and expects to get it no matter what. Andy soon feels like everyone in her personal life doesn't understand how much of a monster her boss is. It wears on her relationship with her boyfriend, best friend, and parents. Andy thinks she needs to do everything to please her boss. She does end up in the end telling her to "F off" and quits.

So the second book in the series is about Andy's PTSD from working at Runway. She makes a new wedding magazine with Emily. Emily wants to sell and Andy doesn't. It's this long drawn out thing where Andy finds out she is pregnant, has the baby, leaves her husband, sells the magazine and resigns. Not much that really could be made in to a movie in my opinion.

The third book follows a friend of Emily's but Emily is in it as well. The friend has moved from a fast paced city life to a small suburb stay at home mom. Her husband has lost interest and she think he is cheating. This friend has a famous model friend who gets in trouble. She brings in Emily to help "fix" the situation as not Emily works as a "fixer". What ends up happening is the model's politician husband has framed her so that he doesn't come out looking like the bad guy when he divorces her and eventually marries a younger more connected woman. Emily gives advice on how to help but she is having martial problems of her own. She meets a man and kind of has an affair with him. But in the end she finds out she is having a baby. The model friends name is cleared and they all stay besties.

I was pretty bored with this movie so I don't really remember a lot. I know some differences occur. Like the boyfriend isn't a teacher he is a chef. Andy has an affair with a writer. I think that the actresses that played the characters did it well. I just couldn't get into the story line they went with. I didn't much care for the book either.
