Forrest Gump by Winston Groom

Forrest Gump (Forrest Gump, #1)

Forrest Gump By Winston Groom I thought was going to be a favorite of mine because I love the movies so much. I was kind of disappointed. Sure it had it's funny moments and it made you laugh out loud a couple of times. But things became so unbelievable that it just made the book go down hill from there.

So let's start with how Forrest went to a different school at the start. He was in a school for special kids but eventually ended up in a regular school. He has a hard time with being just normal. So his momma sets him up on a date with Jenny. He takes her to a movie and in his idiotic way messes it up so it makes it like he was trying to molest her and take her top off. So he gets in trouble and has to see a judge. So he has to go to college or be drafted into the military. He does go to play college football and meets Bubba there. Forrest ends  up meeting Jenny again and they become a band. He ends up failing out so they draft him into the military. He goes to a couple places because he can't seem to stay out of trouble. He blows up a mess tent with his cooking, ruins a soccer game and upsets not only one but 2 countries. He does end up meeting with Bubba again and watching him die and he makes the promise to start the shrimping business. He does get shot in the butt. While in the hospital Forrest meets Lt. Dan who is missing his legs but does not have the strong military connection like the movie. While recovering Forrest watches this man "grow" shrimp. The man teaches him how to do this and when he is released he goes back to the states. When he returns he finds that his mom is in the poor house and he can't stay with her. Forrest does go to find Bubba's dad to tell him the things Bubba wanted. He tells Bubba's dad about the Shrimpin' business. Bubba's dad gives Forrest a boat and shows him the place to grow his shrimp. Every year he gets more and more shrimp and the people from his past all come to help him shrimp. His business becomes big. He gets into some trouble running for office and takes a break and ends up losing his company. All the people from his past screwed him over even his momma.

The movie is one of my favorites. I love Tom Hanks in this part. I do like how momma is portrayed as a better woman in the movie. I also like how the story isn't as far fetched as the books. In the movie he at least learns about his son and doesn't have to go off and make money like he does in the books. The story all in all just plays out better and makes thing more believable and I guess relatable.
